The
GPSMAP 76 has a larger display than the popular eTrex series
and can be used with an external antenna for greater convenience
in awkward viewing situations as well as for improved reception
in poor signal locations. All the buttons are located on the front
face for ease of operation when the unit is supported in a mounting
bracket.
Area calculation (version 2.02 and later, click
here for instructions), position averaging, up to nine programmable
data fields, audible alarms, proximity & anchor drag alarms
are additional features of the GPSMAP 76. This model also features
a built-in quad helix antenna for superior reception

The
GPSMAP 76 can provide position accuracy to less than 3 metres
when receiving WAAS corrections. |
A
large numbers option allows for easy viewing at a distance, and
the backlit display and keypad simpifies
use in low light situtations. The waterproof GPSMAP 76 will keep
working well even if it has been submerged in water, and will
actually float if dropped in the water.
The
GPSMAP 76 comes with a built-in
Americas Highway basemap of cities, coastlines, lakes, rivers,
interstates, and interstate exit information and a database of nautical
navaids.
Basemap:
The version of the GPSMAP 76 sold in North America contains
the Americas
Highway basemap We are not able to supply units with
the Atlantic
or Pacific
basemap; these are available only outside the Americas. |
In addition, this unit has eight megabytes of internal (non-expandable)
user memory for storing optional
MapSource data.
USER
NOTES:
The
GPSMAP 76 is preloaded from the factory with worldwide cities
(populations greater than 200,000) and nautical navigation aids
such as lights, buoys, sound signals and day beacons, as well
as tide data for the United States.
If MapSource data is loaded to the GPSMAP 76, the preloaded
database will be erased. To recover this data the Preloaded Points
of Interest Database file can be downloaded
from GARMIN's web site.
MapSource data and the GARMIN Points of Interest database
cannot be loaded at the same time.
The
GPSMAP 76 will offer support of MapSource
BlueChart data with Version 2.05 or later software.

Feedback
from a Farmer:
"The GPSMap 76 is great for my application in farming. I use
it do a couple things, first I use it to boundary a field to check
the acreage. Then I move it to the tractor where it helps me gauge
my track for fertilizer application. I do this by selecting an appropriate
zoom level, and simply driving parallel at an appropriate distance
from my last pass, shown on the map as a track. When I am done the
field, the track has recorded a nice trace of where in the field
I traveled. Missed spots show up nicely. Mostly it just helps to
keep myself say 30 or 40 feet from my last pass down the field in
applications where you otherwise can't tell where you've been. I
spread fertilizer in the dark the other night. Thay may have been
a first in North America. When the spreader runs dry I mark a way
point so I know where I have left off for later. Then I can move
back to the quad, boundary the area I fertilized, and given I have
a known amount of product spread, I can calculate exactly the application
rate on each load. This helps save money because I can correct rate
errors between loads. I put on the correct rate without over applying.
I tell you the machine works great for this. I use track logs to
trace drainage tile lines, way points to pinpoint key location in
those lines like 'Tees" etc.
